Here's a secret from the bench: diamonds don't lose their sparkle. They collect a thin film of lotion, skin oil and hairspray that blocks light from getting in. Take the film off and the fire comes right back.
The 2-minute clean
- Warm water and a drop of dish soap in a small bowl. Not hot, just warm.
- Soak for a minute to loosen everything.
- Brush gently with a soft, clean toothbrush. Get under the stone, where the grime hides.
- Rinse in a bowl of clean water, not over an open drain.
- Dry with a lint-free cloth and admire.
What to avoid
- Chlorine and harsh chemicals. Take your jewelry off for the pool, hot tub and cleaning day.
- Toothpaste and baking soda. Too abrasive for polished gold.
- Tossing it in a drawer. Diamonds can scratch other jewelry, and each other. Store pieces separately.
When to bring it to us
Once or twice a year, let us take a look. We'll steam clean and polish your piece and check every prong under magnification. It's part of lifetime care for every Don Key piece.
Quick self-check: hold a stud near your ear and tap it lightly. If you hear a tiny click or see the stone move, stop wearing it and get in touch.
